Number Line Road: An Experiential Learning Teaching Material for Understanding Integers

In primary mathematics, abstract ideas such as integers and number operations often become difficult for children to visualize. To make this concept concrete and engaging, an innovative Low-Cost Teaching Material (LTM) called “Number Line Road” has been developed at GPS Chaunrkhal. This simple yet effective model helps children understand numbers, positive and negative integers, and basic operations through play and exploration.

Concept of the LTM

The Number Line Road represents a road with a moving car placed at the center. Alongside the road is a number line ranging from negative numbers to positive numbers, with 0 placed in the middle. The car acts as a visual indicator that moves forward or backward depending on the mathematical operation. This design transforms the classroom into a small interactive environment where children can visualize numbers as positions on a road.

Learning Objectives

This LTM helps learners to:

  • Understand the concept of integers (positive and negative numbers)

  • Identify the position of numbers on a number line

  • Learn addition and subtraction through movement

  • Develop logical and spatial thinking

  • Engage in experiential and joyful learning

Materials Used

The teaching aid is made using easily available materials such as:

  • Cardboard sheet

  • Colored tape or chart paper

  • Sketch pens/markers

  • Sticky notes

  • Paper cut-out of a car

  • Glue and scale

Since the material is low-cost, it can easily be replicated in any school classroom.

How the LTM Works

The car represents the starting point of a number. Students are given simple mathematical expressions using sticky notes placed on the left side of the board.

For example:

  • If the question is –3 + 5, the car first moves to –3 on the number line and then moves 5 steps forward, reaching 2.

  • If the question is 4 – 6, the car starts at 4 and moves 6 steps backward, reaching –2.

In this way, students physically observe how numbers change when moving forward (addition) or backward (subtraction).

Pedagogical Significance

This LTM aligns with modern educational approaches such as:

  • Experiential Learning

  • Joyful Learning

  • Competency-Based Education

  • NEP 2020 focus on conceptual understanding

Children learn better when they see, move, and interact with learning materials rather than only listening to explanations.

Classroom Activities

Teachers can use this model for various activities:

  1. Guess the number game – Move the car and ask students to identify the number reached.

  2. Solve and move – Students solve a problem and move the car accordingly.

  3. Number race – Groups compete to reach the correct answer first.

These activities promote collaborative learning and active participation.

Conclusion

The Number Line Road LTM demonstrates how innovative teaching materials can transform mathematics learning in primary classrooms. By integrating play, movement, and visualization, abstract concepts become meaningful and enjoyable for children. Such creative classroom practices contribute to building strong foundational numeracy skills among young learners.
